Kandersteg - 'The Recky' | 19/05/2009

On 14 May 2009 four Scout Leaders travelled to Kandersteg International Scout Centre in Switzerland to recky it for a summer camp in 2010.
We travelled from Leeds and Bradford airport on a Jet 2 flight to Geneva and then by train (a posh double decker) to Kandersteg.
The Scout Centre was fantastic – with a large camp site and indoor accommodation in chalets. The activities on offer included mountain walks, gondola rides, sled runs, cable cars, high ropes walk in the tree tops, rowing on a mountain lake, a visit to the lakeside town of Interlaken, a trip to Jungenfrau (highest railway station in Europe) incorporating the ice caves under the Eiger and a hike down the Eiger trail to the town of Grindelwald. On site there were all the usual Scouting activities plus the chance to gain four awards – Eco Challenge, High Adventure Challenge, Mini Swiss Adventure and International Adventure.
Throughout the summer there are several international events including disco’s, Swiss culture nights, international parties, wet and wild water activities in the local pool and several educational talks on the formation of the mountains and glaciers in the Alps.
Whilst we were there we tried to fit in a number of visits – the most memorable being the trip in a funicular up the mountain of Niesen. The views from the top were spectacular and the full 360° panoramic showed the Alps at their best.
The programme planning office at the Scout Centre was really helpful and we got loads of ideas for the 2010 trip.
Before we left we provisionally booked 30 places for July/August 2010. Now all we have to do is sell it to the Scouts, so that they can sell it to their parents. Oh yes, and we need to start fundraising!

The Legend of Robin Hood - Film Premiere | 19/05/2009
(The Directors Cut)

After months of work in producing the storyline, casting, filming, editing and ‘the technical bit at the end’ we were finally ready for the premiere of ‘The Legend of Robin Hood’ (The Directors Cut).
The film was shot in several different locations – Walesby Forest Scout Camp, Bradley Wood Scout Camp, Scammonden Activity Centre, Beaumont Park, Ben’s Barn, The Gatehouse at Oakes, Kirklees Priory and the Bridge in the Garden at Honley.
Costumes and props were made, in true Scouting fashion, from whatever we could find.
The actors went off a general storyline and improvised infront of the camera.
The final result – a fantastic 1 hour 45 minute long film that held the audiences attention and had them laughing out loud.
The Premiere Evening was a huge success. Everyone turned up in ‘black tie and posh frocks’ and walked up the red carpet to the balloon archway entrance.
Families took the opportunity to have their photographs taken by the professional photographer John Barry and over 40 orders were taken for the film on DVD.
In the interval there were refreshments, including ice cream and pop corn and the room was buzzing with comments about how well it was going.
At the end there was an oscar presentation to script-writer, camera man, director and editor Craig Ellis and the County Commissioner, Mr Neil Leatherland, congratulated the young people on their achievement.
We would like to thank everyone who turned up to support the event.
All proceeds went to our Kandersteg 2010 fund.

Golcar Lily Day | 19/05/2009
Once again Golcar Scout Group was involved in helping to organise Golcar Lily Day.
On Friday night (in appalling weather conditions!) we put up the two Base Camp Tents on the Vicarage Lawn – these were to be the beer tents. The Scouts blew up 100 balloons and the Explorer Scouts erected notice boards for the artwork displays.
Fortunately Saturday dawned bright and clear and it stayed fine for most of the day. The Scout Group were on site from 7:30am – putting tables and banches in the beer tent, hanging balloons at the artwork venues and providing general assistance to the Golcar Lily Day Team.
The Scout Stall was right outside the Community Centre – we had a number of craft items on sale, a display promoting the Group and lots of games for young people to play.
It was a busy day and well supported by members of the Group, who turned out in uniform and helped out on the stall throughout the day.
